After nearly five years of grueling adjustments and approvals, San Francisco’s planning commission has finally green-lighted Pelli Clarke Pelli’s plans for the Transbay Transit Center in South of Market district. The design consists of a brand new, high-tech transportation hub, laid out at the foot of what will be the west coast’s tallest skyscraper. The 1,070 foot steel and glass tower will join the San Francisco skyline, while the transit center’s modern design and whimsical roof garden will enliven the district. Read more.

The new terminal will be chock full of clean, sustainable design, and plenty of cafes and public areas for travelers to enjoy. The undulating roof is the design’s crowning feature, which will form a 5.4 acre garden aptly named “City Park.” The park attaches to the main tower through a 30 foot wide pedestrian bridge, funneling out into the building’s cafe court on the 5th floor.

Designed to be the main central terminal for the region’s future high-speed rail network, the new transit center is expected to revitalize the downtown area. The space promises to be an important cultural and community space.
